Acclaimed New York restaurant Saxon + Parole to open at Commercial Bay

Precinct Properties have announced that New York City-based restaurateurs AvroKO Hospitality Group (AHG) will make their New Zealand debut to open Saxon + Parole in Auckland CBD development Commercial Bay, which launches in 2019. Overseeing the menu will be AHG executive chef and partner, Michelin-starred chef Brad Farmerie. Chef Farmerie has longstanding Kiwi connections, having worked alongside his mentor Peter Gordon for many years at the Sugar Club in London and at AHG’s first restaurant, the New Zealand-influenced PUBLIC, in New York City. Named after two prize-winning, New York-bred racehorses that inspired international attention at the turn of the twentieth century, Saxon + Parole is also located in New York City’s Bowery district and in Moscow, Russia.

Since its first location opened in New York in 2011, Saxon + Parole has received much acclaim for its menu of “Grilled Meats & Aquatic Delights” and its revered cocktail programme. The restaurant’s inviting bar has been named both “Best American Restaurant Bar” and “Best Restaurant Bar in the World” at the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail Awards and it has also been named one of the “Best Bars in America” by Esquire magazine. The Auckland location’s menu will be inspired by the food, wine and cocktails served in New York, prepared with fresh, local ingredients and a distinctly New Zealand flair.

“I’ve been working with Kiwi ingredients and the incredible suppliers who produce them for decades,” explains Farmerie. “I’m looking forward to opening a restaurant in Auckland and couldn’t be more thrilled with Commercial Bay’s stunning harbourside location. Saxon + Parole will meld New Zealand and New York influences to offer a wholly unique experience.”

With a rooftop terrace overlooking the Waitematā Harbour, Saxon + Parole will be located in transformational Downtown development, Commercial Bay, which is owned and being developed by Precinct Properties. Bounded by Britomart, the Viaduct and the CBD, the new precinct will bring together a world-class mix of restaurants, food and beverage purveyors, office spaces - including a striking 39-storey tower to be known as PwC Tower, public environments, and an urban laneway shopping experience. The area was known as Commercial Bay in the 1800’s, when it was the centre of Auckland’s transport, trade and commerce. This new development will again appoint the southern shore of the Waitematā as the heart of the city, re-establishing a central hub and unique destination for Aucklanders and visitors alike.

“We’re thrilled that such a renowned and established restaurant like Saxon + Parole will make the North Western Terrace of Commercial Bay home,” says Precinct Properties CEO Scott Pritchard. “This is the first hospitality announcement for Commercial Bay and signals the calibre of the other operators we’re working with and the level of interest we’re receiving.”
