Te Manaaki Returns to Light Up the City
Auckland’s 18.4-metre Christmas tree is back, marking its second year as the city’s festive landmark. Last summer, thousands gathered for its debut—a moment that turned the square into Auckland’s glowing heart. This year, the tradition continues.
Te Manaaki isn’t your average Christmas tree. Standing just over 18 metres tall with a steel frame and a star topper, it’s dressed in more than 10,000 LED lights that shimmer across the square, 4,000 vibrant Pōhutukawa flowers, and 200 stainless-steel baubles that catch the evening glow. Built to last, it’s designed to return year after year — a permanent fixture that feels as much a part of Auckland as the harbour itself.
On Saturday, 22 November 2025 from 7.30 - 8.30PM, join in on the lighting of Te Manaaki. Whether young or young at heart, everyone is invited to come together, celebrate and enjoy the magic that only Christmas can bring.
About Te Manaaki
The name Te Manaaki was generously gifted by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākeī, with manaaki meaning respect, care, and hospitality. The name reflects the values that make Auckland special - support for each other, the celebration of culture, and a commitment to community. The base of the tree, designed by Merania Kerehoma of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākeī, draws from traditional Māori mahi toi (art) to honour the heritage and culture of Tāmaki Makaurau, celebrating both where we’ve come from and where we’re headed as a community.
Te Manaaki is a gift for the city from Heart of the City, and Precinct Properties, with support from Auckland Council via the city centre targeted rate.
Make the most of your visit
With Te Manaaki lighting up the square, there’s no better excuse to linger a little longer in the city. Whether you’re arriving early or staying out after the final song, Commercial Bay has plenty of spots to settle in, savour the moment, and take in the atmosphere.
